Issue 02: Fire

Attuning to the Astrology of the Summer Solstice

Solar Dialogue

Moving from the Moon-Water Body into the Sun-Fire Body, this episode uses astronomical astrology, stellar somatics, and tarot to explore solar vitality, digestion, radiance, and expression.

The fire body is our internal hearth: warmth, circulation, metabolism, expression, and the capacity to turn experience into energy. Through breath, humming, laughter, and deep listening, we work with the body’s rhythms directly: Breath of Fire awakens heat and alertness, humming organizes the system through vibration and the vagus nerve, and laughter gives activation a pathway into expression, release, and rest.

Fire becomes not force, but the body’s capacity to metabolize experience without burning out.

At the peak of the Summer Solstice, the Sun illuminates the threshold of Taurus and Gemini — where embodied earth meets breath, language, curiosity, and exchange. Through solar astrology, tarot, and somatic presence, we listen to the conversation between the sky, the fire body, and the present moment.

This threshold helps us notice what action reveals: strength, clarity, purpose, warmth, and the visible movement of becoming. Through this, we explore our inner fires: shifting passions, returning steadiness, and the rhythms that help us remain in radiant attunement with life.

  • Breath of Fire works through rhythmic abdominal and diaphragmatic movement. It changes pressure through the belly, lungs, and thoracic cavity, increases respiratory rhythm, stimulates circulation, and brings alertness and heat into the body. This is the activating current of the practice: waking the solar plexus, digestive fire, and the body’s capacity to mobilize energy.

  • Humming works through vibration, breath length, resonance, and the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is one of the body’s major communication pathways between the brain, throat, heart, lungs, diaphragm, and digestive organs. When we hum, the vocal folds vibrate, the exhale lengthens, the throat and chest resonate, and the body receives a rhythmic signal of regulation. Humming gives fire a container: activation begins to organize through sound.

  • Laughter works through the diaphragm, belly, lungs, heart, throat, face, and social nervous system. It moves breath and charge through the body, circulates warmth, softens holding, and gives emotion a pathway into expression and release. Laughter is not separate from regulation; it is one way the body completes a wave of activation and returns toward rest.

We invite you to attune to your own fire body and the thermal energies of your place through listening, tending, sounding, warmth, and active presence.

In the spirit of Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening, may this be a practice of opening to fire as teacher and living guide — through healthy sun exposure, cooking, candlelight, laughter or the many places fire appears through transformation, energy, friction, radiance, and renewal.

Our closing soundscape follows the Sun-Fire Body through an ecological and cosmological arc. We listen for fire not only as flame, but as heat, illumination, circulation, transformation, ripening, and return.

As we warm ourselves, we extend awareness to the literal and metaphorical fire tenders of our world: those who sustain communal hearths, cultivate thermal energy, and keep the vital sparks of care, warmth, and survival alive.

We honor woodland firefighters and the Indigenous peoples who have actively tended the fires of these lands for generations before colonial fire suppression. This threshold offers a vital chance to learn how the Sun and fire shape your local landscape. Look into who is working to support the ecological health of your region, protecting the living landscapes that hold not only human life, but all our earthling kin.

If you feel called, use your preferred recording device to record your own fire listening practice, upload it to Freesound, and share the link in the comments so we can listen across places together.
